Nursing Scholarships Available
State-funded scholarships aimed at boosting enrollment in
nursing programs across Michigan will be available beginning
October 1.
The legislation was designed to address a statewide nursing
shortage. Senate Bill 793 and House Bill 6054 create a Michigan
Nursing Scholarship Program. The program will give a scholarship
of up to $4,000 per year for up to four years to a nursing
student, in either an RN or an LPN program, enrolled in a
nursing program at a Michigan four-year college or university
or in a two-year community college.
In July 2001, a study conducted by the Michigan Department
of Consumer and Industry Services on the current and future
needs of the professional nursing workforce in Michigan was
released.
The study showed that the number of graduating nursing students
was declining, and that two-thirds of the existing workforce
was over the age of 40. Students interested in the scholarships
should contact their college or university for more information.
